As one of Norway’s oldest bishop’s churches, Stavanger Cathedral is a remarkable example of architectural heritage. Built around 1125, the cathedral has stood at the heart of Stavanger for centuries and reflects the evolution of Norwegian architecture through its Romanesque nave and Gothic choir. Following a major fire in 1272, the eastern part of the cathedral was rebuilt and expanded in the Gothic style, creating the distinctive combination of architectural styles that characterises the building today. As part of the cathedral’s recent renovation, bespoke ultra-slim steel interior door frames by MHB were seamlessly integrated into the historic architecture. Designed with a focus on minimal detailing and precision, the frames create a subtle transition between the existing heritage and the contemporary interventions. Their slender profiles preserve the visual character of the historic interiors while introducing a refined, modern layer to the building.
